Think of it as a petty cash account for your captain and chef. The APA will cover for fuel, port fees, food, drinks, and any additional cost that comes up during the charter. If there is a surplus at the end of the charter it will be returned back to you by the captain. The Advanced Provisioning Allowance is the best way for the crew to tailor the charter to your terms, whilst allowing you to enjoy your freedom to the highest extent.
FAQs: Yacht charter etiquette
The crew are professionals in their respective field and do their best to ensure the yacht is run as seamlessly as possible. There are certain rules and regulations they have to abide by, having a friendly conversation with a crew member is well acceptable, however, keep in mind that they are there to work and overly distracting a crew member could result in a delay of your services. Also keep in mind that being overly friendly with a crew member could put them into an uncomfortable situation, most yachts have a zero alcohol policy for crew members therefore seek to refrain from inviting your crew for drinks. Look at it as a professional environment, interact with them the way you would with your employees or business partners.
You are more than welcome to entertain external guests onboard for a dinner or a day of watersports. But please let the crew know as soon as possible so they can arrange and prepare in advance, and ensure that you and your guests have an exceptional stay.
Certain yachts are happy to host events, however the crew will have to know in advance, in order to make sure they comply with local noise level and capacity laws. On certain yachts an additional security deposit may be requested, in the case of a party. There are numerous events, such as the Monaco F1 Grand Prix, where superyachts go out of their way to encourage parties and gatherings to be held onboard. The number of potential guests for a party onboard varies according to yacht size and capacity.
Essential staff members such as nannies or personal doctors are welcome, granted that the yacht is suitable to accommodate them. If you have special requests, let us know in advance, and we will make sure to find a solution that suits your needs.
The crew do a very good job at making sure the vessel stays impeccable throughout the charter. However, they do appreciate it if you decide to go ashore for lunch one day, for example, or decide to enjoy your breakfast on the sundeck, as it gives them the opportunity to give the yacht a thorough rinse, so that it looks shipshape when you reboard.
As a general rule of thumb, most superyachts are not set up to welcome pets onboard, however there is definitely a handful that is open to accommodate them. Be sure to let us know in your inquiry if you are considering bringing a pet along. Also please state their type, breed, size, and ideally a photo, so we can work out the best possible solution for you.
Every member of the crew wants you to have the very best experience. But if you have any questions or concerns, a quick chat with the Captain is the best thing to do.
Soft luggage always trumps hard shelled suitcases. Despite the staterooms being roomy and comfortable, storage is still often relatively limited. You will find it easier and more rewarding if you pack into easily stable bags and backpacks.
On yachts, crew areas are reserved for the crew. Apart from the obvious, you are allowed to freely explore the vessel within reasonable boundaries. The Captain will host a safety briefing at the beginning of your charter, where he will outline and answer all your questions regarding rules and safety onboard.
Most yachts have teak decks, which are notoriously fragile. By just simply walking across the deck in street shoes, the fine polished wood could get permanent scratches or dents which then lead to lengthy and expensive repairs. Therefore you will be asked to get around barefoot onboard or wear special slippers provided on most yachts. You will often find a shoe basket at the end of the pasarell to keep your pair of sneakers and high-heels ready for when you hit the streets.
It is rare to find a yacht nowadays where smoking in the interior is permitted. However, most yachts will have a designated smoking area for you to enjoy a cigarette with your morning coffee, or a post-dinner cigar at.
Soft luggage that can be easily folded up and stowed away is the best option for packing. That’s because although guest staterooms are beautifully designed, storage is always an issue. Hardshell luggage is difficult to store at the best of times.
FAQs: Preference sheet
The preference sheet is a form that you fill out before departure outlining every bit of your tastes and preferences. Everything like dietary restrictions, how you like your pasta cooked, and your wake up/bedtimes is highlighted on the preference sheet. The preference sheet gives the crew the opportunity to tamper everything to your terms.
Please fill it out as soon as possible, the earlier you send it back, the easier it is for the crew to prepare everything for you, and the better your experience onboard will be. As a general rule of thumb, one month before embarkation is the deadline.
FAQs Advance Provisioning Allowance
The APA is paid simultaneously to your final charter payment, roughly 4 weeks before you embark your vessel. It is then transferred directly to the yacht’s bank account.
The Captain oversees all purchases and expenditures, in addition to ensuring that the crew stay within budget. All receipts will be kept and at the end of your charter you will receive a breakdown report of all your expenditures and transactions off the APA.
It is a rare occasion you run out of the APA budget, however there is always a chance that you decide to spend a little more extravagantly. The APA can always be topped up in cash or by wire transfer during the charter. However, unexpectedly overrunning the budget is not something you need to worry about, for the Captain will warn you of any outstanding costs that may cause you to fall short, well in advance.
Absolutely! If there are any remaining funds on the APA account at the end of your charter, your Captain will return the remainder to you in either cash or wire transfer before you disembark the yacht.

FAQs: Tipping
Give your tip to the Captain. He will distribute it evenly between all crew members. This is the best method to make sure that even the crew members working behind the scenes to make your week memorable, get their reward. If you feel like there was a specific member of the crew that went above and beyond, and you feel deserves acknowledgement, be sure to let the captain know, he will take care of it.
It is up to you how much you tip your crew, but as an industry wide standard, the MYBA recommends a tip of about 10-15% of your charter fee.
